So what is a PayPal account?

Once upon a time, around the year 2002 AD an e-commerce platform emerged. This platform was so lucrative and popular so much so that everybody got crazy about it.

But there was a problem.

They needed a secure faster and convenient way for users to do payment online.

let me not bore you with the details.

eBay in the early 2000’s popularized PayPal as a payment system of choice. That is when eBay acquired PayPal in 2002 after its initial public offering (IPO).

As a result of the millions of transactions that took place on eBay, there was a need for a cheap and convenient payment platform.

eBay as a buying and selling marketplace had many users who were not able to afford a credit card payment system. There was no trust in virtually typing in credit card details over the internet.

This was a worry for most buyers. That was risky. Nobody wanted to compromise.

ebay had no choice but to improvise, think and make decisions. They behaved like real human beings and made the right decisions.

They were not ready to compromise with users credit card on a new and thriving platform.

Established in 1998 as Confinity, PayPal became a wholly owned subsidiary of ebay.

They had no choice but to acquire PayPal.

This was an evolutionary payment system for all users -  both sellers and buyers are offered a safe and secure account that could be funded by a debit or credit card or from a bank account?

Ease of use.

All eBay user's needed was an email account or address. It was that simple.

PayPal does all the back-end and magic for you. All it required to use your PayPal account for an online transaction was an email address.  Perfecto!

Very sad to hear that PayPal shares plummeted 10 percent in extended trading after longtime partner eBay said it was going with a new payment system.

eBay is now flirting with PayPal rivals Adyen. It is quite obvious that PayPal is getting complacent with its market share.

However, please know the core values that defines PayPal and your PayPal Ghana account will not suffer.

A strong and robust PayPal account must be able to be used to transact online business in Ghana safely, securely and faster. PayPal is all about:

You also get an international payment services - a legitimate affiliate US bank account with a routing and bank account details.

In fact, PayPal used to accept this bank account until scammers started creating fake accounts on PayPal with this bank account. Then PayPal stopped accepting this affiliate bank account.

Either than that, you could’ve easily done a simple PayPal account signup linked this US bank account to your PayPal account in Ghana and you've got a legitimately verified PayPal Ghana account.

Quite sad to know but you can always try Payoneer - It is free.

Payoneer is one of the leading online payment systems just like PayPal but not as popular as PayPal. They even have a feature where u can link your local bank account as well, something they didn't do previously.

The last time I checked - which was last year Ghana was not one of the countries that could link a local bank account.

But only last week I found Ghana in there I contacted the customer service and now I'm able to link a local bank account to my Payoneer account which gives me access to my funds.

My money can be transferred to me directly from my Payoneer account to my local bank account here in Ghana.  Technology for you.

This is good news for freelancers, affiliate marketers and bloggers doing online businesses.

We can now add the international address we just created.

PayPal Ghana 2018 tip #4: Getting Legit US Phone number

Just like we adding an address, we will take care of another very important step.

PayPal rest on your email address and your phone number particularly because it is the easiest way to verify your details and rectify issues with your account.

PayPal sees accounts with no mobile phone number as not very serious.

For calling PayPal customer care and other online verification's, we will find and add an international mobile phone number to this account.

PayPal Ghana 2018 tip #5: Adding US Phone number

We can now add this mobile number to our PayPal Ghana 2018 account.

PayPal Ghana 2018 tip #6: Confirming Email Address

We will confirm our email address to activate our PayPal account in this video.

Your email address will be very peculiar in the whole PayPal account signup process.

Do not ignore emails.

In fact check them regularly for any account verification.

PayPal Ghana 2018 tip #7: Adding the Prepaid or Debit Card

Without a card, your account won't be complete.

Get a prepaid card from any bank for this purpose. I've used UBA bank's Africard for a while now and it is the best. You only pay 2cedis when you do deposits.

I've tried GT bank's prepaid card and i was charged 35cedis and the transaction charges is crazy. I will go with UBA's Africard any day.

You can find the full advanced course on my training section very soon.

Withdrawing money from your PayPal account

Nobody jokes when it comes to withdrawing money from any financial entity. Money is blood. I'll be talking about withdrawing money from Ghana soon.

However, upon my research on various PayPal forum threads on their website, this is what i found. It's quite simple to withdraw money from your PayPal account.

There a 3 ways to withdraw money from your PayPal account

  1. You can transfer money directly to your linked bank account,
  2. use your PayPal Debit MasterCard®, or
  3. have us mail you a check.

Bank transfer

The most popular way to withdraw money from your PayPal account is to transfer the money directly into your bank account.

Log in to your PayPal account, enter the amount you want to withdraw, and select the bank account to receive the money. PayPal will securely transfer the amount from your PayPal balance into your bank account at no cost to you.

Estimated arrival time: 1 business day

Some transfers made after the close of day (7 pm going) or on weekends or holidays take longer to hit your bank account.

All transfers are subject to review and could be delayed or stopped if PayPal identifies an issue with your account.

The minimum amount a user can withdraw is $1.00 USD.

It is advisable that your registered name on your PayPal account matches the name on your bank account.

Eligible Visa and MasterCard Debit & Prepaid Cards

Withdrawing to your bank using an eligible debit or prepaid card is a faster way to withdraw money from your PayPal account according to various forum threads on the PayPal website.

Estimated arrival time: about 30 minutes.

All PayPal transfers are subject to review and could be delayed or stopped if there are any identity issues with your account.

According to PayPal, “There is a $0.25 fee to withdraw money using your an eligible debit or prepaid card. Additional currency conversion rates may apply when withdrawing from a non-domestic currency.”

PayPal Debit MasterCard

The PayPal Debit MasterCard is the fastest way to withdraw money from your PayPal account says PayPal. There are a number of mergers between PayPal and other service providers and one of them is PayPal Debit Mastercard.

In fact, this is the main reason why PayPal is gradually doing away with the option of withdrawing money on to your linked debit card. They want this option replaced by the PayPal Mastercard which is fetching them good money.

Why withdraw from your card if they can sell you on getting their Mastercard and using it for your transaction. That is what most of these services do anyway.

If you qualify, you can use your PayPal Debit MasterCard® at most ATMs to get cash from your PayPal account. Select

Receive a check

If you don't want to transfer money to your bank account, you can request a check. Log in to your PayPal account, click Transfer to your bank under your balance and click Request a check by mail instead. Customers in the U.S. should receive checks within 1-2 weeks. It may take up to 6 weeks for customers outside the U.S. to receive a check.

PayPal applies apply a fee of $1.50 USD for each issued check.

I'm sorry to announce to you that none of the procedures above in withdrawing money from a PayPal account apply to you as a Ghanaian.

Why?

This is because of a number of reasons:

  1. PayPal is not in Ghana - even if you can have an account in Ghana, withdrawing money is quite tricky.
  2. You don't have the option of withdrawing your PayPal balance into your debit card. That option will be off for you.
  3. You’re a lonely man wandering in a strange land - anything can happen to you.

But there’s HOPE.

If PayPal will not come to Ghana - Ghana will go to PayPal.

Withdrawing money from your PayPal Ghana account from Ghana

PayPal Ghana - How to withdraw

There a number of ways to withdraw money from your PayPal balance right here in Ghana. Let's dive in:

  1. This is the simplest I've found even though it may require a dose of trust between the transacting parties. Kwaku sends Kofi a Ghana cedis equivalent of how much he wants to withdraw either through PayPal, mobile money or bank transfer and Kofi pays Kwaku from his PayPal account. Simple
  2. In facts, almost all the firms claiming to help you withdraw from PayPal does number either in one way or the other. There are a number of third-party service providers in Ghana such as who will help you withdraw money from your PayPal balance. It may take a few days for your withdrawal to hit your money of bank account.
  3. If you've followed me along and have created an offshore bank account such as Leupay - then withdrawing money through a legitimate offshore account in your name is limitless. This is possible if your account is in Europe or the same country linked to your Leupay account.
  4. If you know anyone who has successfully linked a bank account to their PayPal account, that could be an option to withdrawing your money. It's by simply sending your withdrawing equivalent to their PayPal account whiles they also pay you in exchange. I've done it several times for people.
  5. The last time I checked Hubtel formally SMSgh used to withdraw PayPal money with a shortcode for users. I never tried it though but I heard it worked then. I learned they don’t do it anymore but you can always hit them up and ask for help.
  6. Simply pay or send the amount you want to withdraw to a friend or family member abroad. They will, in turn, send you the currency equivalent through money or your local bank account.

Sincerely speaking withdrawing money from your PayPal ghana account seems to be the only thing we’re still struggling with. However, if Ghanaians can cultivate trust and think like every other human being, I don't think this should be an issue. People with smart goals have clear conscience.

Hit me up if you need help. I will exchange it for free. Ghanaians love free things - "Imma give it them!". If your motive is to dupe me. Hehe, the PayPal system is so wired up - you may end up injuring yourself.

Blacklisted PayPal Countries:

PayPal Ghana - blacklisted countries

After my extensive research, I've realized that PayPal doesn't recognize this list of countries at all - even for payments. And if you will study the list carefully, you'll come to the realization that Ama Ghana is not on the list.

Why?

This is because PayPal doesn’t publicly or subtly publish countries they don’t operate in. I believe is a sign of respect to those countries. However, they consistently advise their users not to send money from particular countries. And this is the list of countries.

The restricted countries vary depending on the country where your PayPal user’s business is domiciled. In the US, you can generally expect that payments will not be accepted from the following countries:

  • Belarus
  • Burma (Myanmar)
  • Cote d'Ivoire
  • The Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Liberia (Former Regime of Charles Taylor)
  • Persons Undermining the Sovereignty of Lebanon or Its Democratic Processes and Institutions
  • North Korea
  • Sierra Leone
  • Sudan
  • Syria
  • Western Balkans
  • Zimbabwe

Be sure to check government sites, such as the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) Resources page, for the most up-to-date information.

PayPal blacklist countries: countries not supported by PayPal

According to research, PayPal was available in some form in 191 countries as of May 2013 with reference to John lister’s post on this matter.

PayPal only offers limited service in some other countries, for example, Nigeria in recent years. It has no dealings whatsoever in some other countries, many of which are in the Middle East or Africa.

Why are some countries blacklisted to create a PayPal account

PayPal Ghana

Generally, Governing bodies often have regulations and financial sanctions in place in various countries that prohibit money transfers and transactions with certain high-risk countries. In most cases, the processing bank will decline transactions that originate from these countries. In the rare instance that the processing bank authorizes the transaction, the funding bank will prevent it from settling.

Availability

As of April 2013, PayPal offered full locally-based services in 26 countries. In another 18 countries, you can have a PayPal account and transfer money to a local or US bank account. In countries like India and Vietnam, you can only transfer money to your local bank account. In a further 64 countries, you can only withdraw money to a US bank account. In 83 other countries, you can have a PayPal account but cannot withdraw money to a bank account.

No Availability

According to John Lister of Chron.com PayPal does not maintain a list of countries where it does not provide its services. However, a comparison of the United Nations' list of member states and the PayPal list of countries with some service clearly shows 28 countries without service as of May 2013. These are: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Cote D'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Monaco, Moldova, Montenegro, Myanmar, Pakistan, Paraguay, Saint Lucia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Timor-Leste, Uzbekistan and Zimbabwe. This list may be updated looking at the 15-year interval, however, most of these countries including Ghana is not PayPal friendly.

Rationale behind this decision

PayPal does not publicly detail why it does not service particular countries. Media speculation suggests common reasons could include insufficient regulation and security in a country's banking system, failure of a country to comply with U.S. tax law, or a U.S. trade ban affecting a country. The availability of PayPal in countries can and does change. For example, in April 2013 PayPal became available in Egypt for the first time.

Restriction

Although PayPal lets you change your address when you move, you cannot change your address to one in another country, even if PayPal operates in that country. If you move abroad, you have two options. You can close your account and open a new one, or you can have two accounts -- one account in your old country and one in the new one. However, the two accounts must be of different types (premier, personal or business) and must each be linked to a different email address and bank account.

The blacklist side of this post was copied from Chron.com’s John Lister post on What Country Doesn't Work With PayPal?

How PayPal Identifies Potentially Fraudulent Transactions

paypal Ghana fraud

First, when processing payments online, it's very important to know the common indicators of fraud. This will help you to identify suspicious transactions from bad people and scammers and act accordingly.

And PayPal, a billion dollar company does this perfectly.

Below, is an outline of some questions to they ask when determining whether a transaction is legitimate or not. Typically it's best to trust your instincts, but

If they're unsure of your identity or see abnormal fidgeting and transactions in your account, they will not hesitate to hit you up for more details.

And it is a good thing. Apparently, someone is using your card or details for transactions which are quite rare in our side of the world. This issue normally goes against us instead and we’re either found wanting or banned.

If you find something wrong with your PayPal Ghana account feel free to contact the PayPal customer service. That is why I need you to verify a PayPal international phone number.

PayPal Account Ghana: A number of things to watch in your PayPal account

paypal Ghana watch

This is how PayPal deals with your PayPal Ghana account when it comes to security. This is why I always recommend doing and using legitimate business details which you can get free for your online business transactions.

They have programmed bots which ask these questions every day about the health of your account and if you fall short of any of these - you’re CHOPPED!

Customer name

  • Does the customer's name match the name on the card or account?
  • Is the name misspelled?
  • Is the formatting of the name incorrect?

It may be a red flag if the name is in all lowercase or missing an apostrophe or hyphen where necessary.

Customer address

  • Do the billing and shipping addresses match? Fraudulent transactions often have a shipping address that is far away from the billing address.
  • In the billing address, do the country, state, and city match? Sometimes fraudsters will enter a completely different country, e.g. Chicago, IL, Indonesia.
  • Did they request expedited delivery? Fraudsters want products ASAP, so they will likely choose the fastest form of shipping available.

Customer email

  • Do the cardholder's name and email address align? For example, if the customer's name is Bob Smith, his email is more likely to be [email protected] than [email protected]
  • Does the customer's email address have an old or common domain? Fraudsters tend to use domains like mail.com, inbox.com, outlook.com, yahoo.com, or juno.com, or domains that don't exist. It can also be suspicious if the email address includes a company name followed by a generic domain, like [email protected]
  • Are there random characters in the customer's email address? If the email address aligns with the cardholder name, be wary of random characters in the suffix, such as [email protected] Any string of 3 or more random alphanumeric characters could be cause for concern.

Transaction details

  • Are you seeing an abnormally large number of transactions in a short period of time, especially for the same amount or from the same card brand? This is a common indicator of a carding attack.
  • Are you seeing multiple transactions with the same BIN but different card numbers? The first 6 digits of the card number, also known as the BIN, can be used to identify the specific branch of a bank that issued the card. It's unusual to see the same BIN twice, so if you do, it's possible that a series of cards from that bank has been compromised.
  • Is the transaction from a country that is outside of your normal demographic? This is worth investigating, especially if the transaction amount is larger than normal.
  • Is it a prepaid or gift card? These are often associated with suspicious activity. On the other hand, corporate or travel and expense cards are typically trustworthy.

Note: You can use free BIN search websites like binbase.com to find out where a card originated.

So these items taken from a PayPal affiliate company offering PayPal services to its clients tell you how PayPal know about every account in their database.

PayPal may not be in Ghana but they’re definitely not targeting Ghanaians or anybody. They are thriving company looking for the good of all its users. All you need to do is to legitimate and work with a clear conscience.

I'm sorry to tell you that they know about your PayPal Ghana account but if you’re clean and respectful to the platform - they’ll also respect YOU.

Thank you.
