Love it – or not. Does it really matter?

Apparently, people still don’t believe there’s money to earn online. I regard myself as a struggling online entrepreneur.

We all believe we can be successful when we’re enlighten on what’s really possible online. Especially with the growing numbers of success stories.

It’s obvious, online business is one of your top smart goals – high on your goal-setting list.

In fact, you’re a successful online entrepreneur only if you succeed.Today’s internet offers no barrier to starting an online business. It’s never been this easy.

Requirement:

  • A laptop
  • A determined You

It’s all about starting out now. They say. And reaping the benefit later.

Great, isn’t? But hey, it’s not for everyone! I know that for sure.

There are many waiting to make m​​​​oney out of you – the glitches are hard to find – sure the devil is in the details.

There is nothing to lose and everything to gain. We can’t help but ‘take the spaghetti approach’ – throwing a bunch of stuff against the wall and hoping something sticks.

There are several online entrepreneurs who have struggled and would’ve done things differently if they had the chance to. One way or the other.

I would like us to pick on their minds and learn valuable advice from them. It’s only smart, prudent and wise not to repeat their mistakes. That’s all about entrepreneurship.

What we’ll learn from successful entrepreneurs today may save new and struggling entrepreneurs. Obviously, the valuable time, energy and resources. At least, it will get more people thinking.

Scott Voelker is a pretty simple guy. A family man with 3 amazing kids. Successfully managed a portrait studio for 10 years and a New Portrait Biz into a very successful online business.

In 2014, he fell in love with FBA (Fulfillment By Amazon) and private labeling to sell physical products. And the rest is history.

Question: “What do you wish you knew before starting your own business?”

“The one thing that I wish that I knew before starting my own business is that, on day one – I started building a quality email list of my ideal customer.

By spending more time learning about my market and spending time to create killer content.

You know, not just content to publish and get more out there to potentially get more leads.

But more quality leads.

By spending time to really understand your customer or your prospect. There is so much power within that. I can’t stress it enough.

And I’m telling this to myself back when I first started.

Quality over quantity. Quality over quantity.

I mean this goes for any business. It could be brick and mortar, it could be e-commerce, and it could be digital product creators.

It doesn’t matter. Quality over quantity. I’m telling you. It is powerful.

All right, if you understand, and I’m kind of saying this to myself again. Your list will help you create more focused content.

That’s going to then in turn – help your customers to receive better results and then, from there – you’re not going to guess what they want.

They are going to tell you what they want.

They are gonna become raving fans. All right. And that’s the really cool thing – so I want to say, Pat, thank you for inviting me to answer this question. It was a tough one by the way.

But I will also say, if you read Pat’s book: “Will It Fly” that goes into a lot of detail about this stuff that I kind of went over.

And I wish I had pat’s book 10years ago. My appreciations”

My take on that:

Getting to know your ideal customers is golden. People get so excited, starting out as entrepreneurs and ignore this golden rule.

However, having a fair knowledge of your prospective customer will drive your success.

Obviously, building an email list is so powerful, engaging and relevant to your overall success as an online entrepreneur. Moreover, when you research thoroughly about your customers, you gain valuable insight into their problems, pain and fears.

Done right, your online business becomes a problem solver, a perfect solution and you become an authority in your industry. Get this powerful but difficult part of your business journey fixed, and all other things fall into place.

I really wish before I started my business that I knew really truly in my soul how OK it is to ask for help.That’s something I’ve always struggled with and I think people do, because they think they have to make everything seem like it’s going great.

You know what you’re doing and you constantly doing things to stay in the know – but sometimes other people have just made the mistakes that we don’t necessarily have to make or have the experiences that will be extremely valuable to us.

And just knowing that its OK to ask for help is something that might be hard for you to rap your mind around.

That certainly was for me and I wish I really knew that because I might have even taken the jump sooner that I did.

I felt pretty secured by the time I was ready to make this jump –it was still kind of scary that I was going to go full-time on my own gig.

And I was going to be solely responsible for just making sure the business grow and that I had a pay checks.

That I could pay bills but I think I would have done it even soonerjust knowing that by surrounding yourself with people who wantto help because you can help them too is an incredible way to setyourself up for success.

And that you truly can do it when you do surround yourself withthat environment.

I think that’s still the one and only thing I wish I knew before I started my business because everything else is pretty easy to learn if you care enough, but just allowing yourself to be in that vulnerability and ask for help is a pretty big thing to just get, understand and feel.”

By far, this is one of the best business tip and the most difficult aspects of being a successful entrepreneur or businessman.Your willingness to ask for help – at the right time. Many are those who ignore this business advice.

I believe strongly that asking for help is a gift. In fact, it only makes you human. As in the law of reciprocity, people you have helped will go their way to return the favour.

Ask for help when the need arises. Apparently,There’s always ‘that somebody’ who is ever willing to help you.

If there is one thing I knew back in the day that I discovered nowadays, is the importance of building relationships for the long haul.

It is so easy to… when you start your business to be thinking about how Iever get to the next step.

Who do I need to do this for me or on what stage do I need to be speaking.

That’s kind of short term thinking.

I just found that constantly building relationships with people haveabsolutely been the key to my success and if I’d figured this out in theearly days, I knew I would be much more successful in the future.

So take your time, make sure that you are investing in people without expecting anything in return and you can find great enemies in success.

The least said – the better. How can I get this right into your ear’s?

The act of building genuine, long lasting and relevant relationships is divineHowever, only the visionary and strong-minded get to acknowledge this fact.

Going out of your way to serve and help others without expecting nothing in return will pay in the future. Ideally, in many cases open doors for you – to a large extent.

“To answer the question of that one thing I’d known before starting my own business….

That one thing is the power of concentrated focused effort.

Now, we’ve reach a point that there are a ton of business models, varioussocial media platforms and a variety of traffic generation strategies.

So it’s really tempting to try them all and be kind of on every single platform, to have every single social media website.

I found that this is really kind of a dangerous mindset because you can’t build momentum if you’re spreading yourself too thin.

So what has worked for me on the couple of internet businesses that I’ve built, is to sit down and identify your 80/20.

So identify those 20% of your activities that generate 80% of your results and just really focusin on those few couple of things and to do this on a regular basis.

My suggestion is to do this activity first thing in the morning before you do anything else.

So you get up in the morning. Don’t open up your phone to look atFacebook or do anything else that’s distracting.

My recommendation is to get your butt in the chair, sit down andto do that one test before doing anything else.

You know, that one test for me is writing but if you’re into YouTubemarketing and my suggestion is to create a YouTube video beforeyou do anything else or if you’re in physical product space then youshould spend an hour every morning trying to find out the nextphysical product that you can source.

Now, you will be amazed by the things you could do with a lot ofconsistent concentrated focused effort.

And pretty much every business – like I mentioned before that I have done.

I’ve been able to do well because I’ve just focused on the critical testfirst thing in the morning.

Now there are a lot of great books on this subject.

I know Pat have probably mentioned them in the previous podcastand yes I know for a fact – I’ve heard him mention in previous podcast.

But if you’re interested in more on this topic then I can recommend:

  • “The One Thing” by Gary Keller
  • “The Compound Effect” by Jerry and Hardy……. and
  • “The Slight Edge” by Jeff Alson.

All three of those really drives home the point of – what you can do with habitual effort on regular basis.

“So before I started my business I wish I would’ve really understood that you should build your business of your gifts and not just your passions.

When I started my own business I was really trying to figure out what I was passionate about and I wanted to pursue that.

But in that search I didn’t think about what I’m really great at and soI think it led me down paths that it ended up being a lot work, a lot more time and effort than I was really able to pull out and ultimately a lot of failures.

My success started happening when I recognized that I need to hone in on my gifts.

And your gift is that thing that comes easily to you – that looks hardto everybody else.

The one where people come to you and say: How did you do that so quickly?

How did you do that so well?

I could never do that.

That is your gift….

That is where you need to build your business because you’re able todo it quicker and better, more effectively, more efficiently, moreawesomer– if that were a word.

That other people can’t and that has valuethat has monetary value.

Not only that – you’re able to then infuse the passions that you have andbring life from the passions you have, into that gift because it comes easily to you. It brings you to life.

You will recognize that your gift actually brings your passions out of you – versus trying to figure out what your passions are and then build businesses around them.

Some of us may wake up and know exactly what we were meant to do. Exactly where we are supposed to be and exactly how we are supposed to do it.

But most of us don’t. Most of us are in the constant state of search.

So I wish that I would’ve known that pursuing my gift and really digging inand figuring out what that gift was and pursuing that as a business was gonna be the sweet spot.

I would have been so much farther than I am right now.

Luckily I figured it out and so were able to have a great business strategy- foundation which is my gift and able to help mom entrepreneurs build a business and a family at the same time without feeling guilty.

Those two together is the winning combo to be able to have a reallythriving and vibrant business.

So make sure you find your gift and not just your passion when it comes to building your business. “

Obviously, we humans are in a constant state of search.

Nevertheless, I agree with Dana – to begin with your gifts. You will often question, ignore and underrate your strengths.

This definitely makes the creator sad.

We’re adequately equipped with all physical and spiritual gifts to succeed and overcome any challenge we face.

The choice has always been ours and will always be ours.
